Cavity Wall Insulation
Comprehensive guide to pumped bonded bead insulation and SEAI retrofitting in Ireland for 2026.
Upgrading your cavity wall insulation is one of the most efficient ways to improve home comfort in Ireland. Bonded bead cavity insulation fills the empty space between masonry blocks, trapping heat and lowering energy consumption.
Cavity wall construction is common in Irish homes. If the cavity is left empty, warm air circulates within the wall, drawing heat away from your home. Pumped EPS beads eliminate this airflow, forming a reliable thermal barrier.
Core Pillars of Bonded Bead Systems
Pumped EPS Bead
Bonded polystyrene beads are pumped into the wall cavity, forming a continuous thermal blanket.
High Heat Retention
Saves up to 15 percent on heating bills by stopping draughts and keeping walls warm.
Damp Prevention
The bonded bead allows water to drain naturally down the cavity, preventing damp transfer.
NSAI Compliance
All materials used must be NSAI certified to ensure long term safety and performance.
The Installation Process
Injecting cavity insulation is a non disruptive process that is completed from the exterior of your home. It typically takes less than one day.
- Site Survey: The contractor inspects the wall cavity using a borescope to ensure it is clean, free of mortar blockages, and suitable for insulation.
- Drilling Injection Holes: Small holes are drilled in the mortar joints of the exterior wall in a predefined pattern to ensure even distribution.
- Injecting the EPS Bead: The polystyrene beads are mixed with a bonding agent and pumped into the cavity under pressure. The adhesive binds the beads together, preventing settlement.
- Sealing the Wall: Once filled, the injection holes are filled with matching mortar, leaving no visible trace of the work.
SEAI Cavity Insulation Grants
You can access substantial grants for cavity wall upgrades. To qualify, your home must have been built before 2011 and the work must be signed off by a registered SEAI contractor.
