SEAI External Wall Insulation Grants
Your simple guide to making your EWI project more affordable with government support from the SEAI.
The Irish government, through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), offers substantial grants to help homeowners invest in energy-saving upgrades. The SEAI external wall insulation (EWI) grant is one of the most generous grants available, significantly reducing the cost of this transformative project.
How Much is the SEAI Grant for EWI?
The grant amount you can receive depends on your house type. The goal of the grant is to cover a significant portion of the total cost, making it accessible to more homeowners.

Am I Eligible for the Grant? The 3 Key Rules
Eligibility is straightforward for most homeowners. You must meet three main criteria:
1. Home Built Before 2011
The grant is for improving the existing housing stock. Your home must have been built and occupied before 2011 to qualify for insulation grants.
2. Use an SEAI Registered Contractor
You cannot do the work yourself or use a general builder. The work MUST be carried out by a contractor who is officially registered with the SEAI for that specific type of upgrade. You can browse our directory for vetted, registered installers.
3. Grant Approved BEFORE Work Starts
This is critical. You must apply for and receive your grant offer from the SEAI *before* any work begins on site. Work carried out before the grant offer date is not eligible.
The Application Process: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide
The SEAI has made the process very user-friendly. Here’s how it works for your external wall insulation project:
- 1Choose a Contractor: Find an SEAI registered contractor. They will visit your home, assess its suitability, and provide you with a detailed quote for the work.
- 2Apply Online: With your chosen quote, you or your contractor can complete the grant application on the SEAI website. You'll need your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) from your electricity bill and your bank details.
- 3Receive Grant Offer: The SEAI will review your application and issue a grant offer. This is usually a quick process, often within a few working days.
- 4Complete the Work: Your contractor can now begin the EWI installation. The grant is valid for 8 months from the date of the offer, giving you plenty of time.
- 5Payment: After work is complete, your contractor submits the required paperwork to the SEAI. The grant is then paid directly into your bank account. You are then responsible for paying the contractor's full invoice.
